The Details

In the summer of 2015, I flew out to the Boston area to jam on some online fundraising optimization with Holmes and Tiff of Fight for the Future. Ultimately, it became an exercise in what we could take away. We spent two days trimming back what was there, and talking about what testing ideas they could implement in the future.

On the technical side, the first thing I did was refactor the javascript. This made it a little more readable, and helped me to understand what was going on. Next I started removing external scripts. Because of a combination of browser versions targeted, and a lack of using Ajax, jQuery was a straightforward library to remove. Ultimately I was able to strip away the entire bower_components directory, reducing HTTP requests and improving load time.

Visually, step one was to make the form tighter and responsive. I wanted to make sure the form itself was the only visible element on load. Learning from my own and others’ testing, removing distractions on donate forms increases conversions.

During this two-day jam session, I had the opportunity to not only work with several members of Fight for the Future in person, but also collaborate with CTO Jeff Lyon via Google Hangouts. It was a great experience and I think quite a success.
