I jumped into this project as we had two major demos rapidly approaching: first, to the Canadian Parliament, followed just two weeks later by Mobile World Congress. The drive behind it was absolutely ideal—actual research from the field, delivered to us in thorough reports as well as specific requests and suggestions. We learned that much of the developing world is getting online for the first time via entry-level smartphones. Many of them have never seen the world wide web beyond, for example, the Facebook app. Our ultimate goal was to help people not just experience the web, but become makers of the web, too.
As our demo days approached, we closed hundreds of issues in just four weeks. Ultimately, we had an offline-first app specifically optimized to run on inexpensive smartphones. In its easy-to-use interface, people were able to build, share, and publish their own “apps”—without needing to know a lick of code.
